Metabolic Efficiency Testing (VO2 Sub Max)
At Life Fit Labs, we believe in training smarter, not harder. As our founder says, “Nobody has time for junk miles.” That’s why our Metabolic Efficiency Testing with the VO2 Sub Max test is designed to help you optimize your workouts by pinpointing your body’s exact fat-burning and glucose-burning zones. You can’t figure this out by looking at a generic age chart on an exercise machine or poster. When we find your optimum fat burning zone, you will know what your heart rate was at that point and have an idea of what the RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) feels like so you can find this point when exercising on your own.
What is Metabolic Efficiency Testing?
Metabolic efficiency testing measures how efficiently your body uses fat and carbohydrates (glucose) for fuel at various exercise intensities. By using a VO2 Sub Max test, we can determine the precise point at which your body switches from primarily burning fat to relying on carbohydrates. This test uses the same equipment as a VO2max test, but a different protocol. The stages are longer, but the intensity will not be increased to the point of exhaustion, maximum heartbeat, or maximum VO2 uptake.
This knowledge is crucial regardless if you’re just starting your fitness journey, a fitness enthusiast, or an elite athlete. It’s for everyone who wants to optimize performance, endurance, and energy levels without wasting time on “junk miles”—inefficient workouts that don’t contribute to your fitness goals.
What is it Used For?
Metabolic efficiency testing is beneficial for:
- Maximizing Fat Burning/Stimulate Mitochondria: By identifying your personal fat-burning zone (zones 1 and 2), you can structure your workouts to improve endurance and efficiency while burning more fat. Exercising in this zone prompts your body to increase the number and effectiveness of your mitochondria.
- Improving Athletic Performance: For athletes, this test is invaluable in tailoring your training plans to enhance performance without overtraining. Most people don’t realize that Tour de France competitors, who are arguably the fittest people on the planet, spend 80% of their training time in Zone 2 to increase their aerobic base capacity.
- Fueling Strategies: You’ll learn how to fuel your body based on your unique metabolic profile, helping you avoid energy crashes (“bonking”) and optimize endurance. You will be in a better position to know how many carbs you may need during a long endurance effort without overdoing it and risking gastric distress.
What to Expect During Your Test?
- The Test Setup: The VO2 Sub Max test can be performed on either a treadmill or bike, depending on your preference. If you're a cyclist, you are welcome to bring your own bike to the test on our Wahoo KICKR Snap, ensuring you're using the exact setup you rely on for your rides.
-
During the Test: You will wear a mask and heart rate monitor while performing the test, which gradually increases in intensity. The VO2 Sub Max test is less strenuous than a full VO2 Max test, as it’s designed to stop before reaching maximum exertion.
Beards will interfere with the seal of the mask. If you can’t shave for the test, we can apply a gel to the mask to try to seal it. This will require washing it off after the test. Trimming your beard will also help. - Post-Test Consultation: After the test, we’ll review your data and provide you with a detailed report on your fat-burning and glucose-burning zones. We’ll explain how to use this information to improve your training, diet, and fueling strategy.
Why is Metabolic Efficiency Important?
With metabolic efficiency testing, you can fine-tune your training to target the zones that will give you the most benefit, making every workout count.
