DEXA Scan Test

Comprehensive DEXA Services: Know Your Body Composition and Your Bone Health

At Life Fit Labs, we use a state-of-the-art Hologic DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) machine—the same technology pioneered for precise bone mineral density measurement in 1989. Our scanner is fast, accommodates larger individuals comfortably, and delivers highly accurate results with an extremely low radiation dose (less than a typical transcontinental flight).

We are one of the few facilities offering both types of DEXA scans in one convenient location:

Most places specialize in one or the other. We provide both so you get the full picture of your health and fitness.

What Is a Whole Body DEXA Scan?

This scan gives you a complete breakdown of your body composition:

Why get a Whole Body DEXA?

If you’re serious about managing body composition—whether for fat loss, muscle gain, athletic performance, or healthy aging—you must measure what you’re trying to improve. Don’t guess with calipers, scales, or less precise methods. Your report includes an Appendicular Lean Mass Index with age- and sex-matched peer comparisons.

What Is a Dedicated Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Scan?

This is the gold-standard clinical test (often called a “bone density test” or “DEXA for osteoporosis screening”). It precisely measures bone density at the hip and lumbar spine—the two sites most predictive of future fracture risk because they contain high amounts of metabolically active trabecular bone.

Key outputs include:

Important clarification on T-scores: Standard DEXA software often defaults to providing T-scores only for individuals 50 and older. At Life Fit Labs, we generate these clinically relevant scores starting at age 30 (your expected peak bone density) so you have a true baseline. For clients under 30, we provide age- and sex-matched peer comparisons. This proactive approach is especially valuable for women, who may still have many years of natural estrogen production ahead—giving them a longer window to make meaningful lifestyle changes before considering hormone replacement therapy or other interventions.

Note: A whole-body scan provides only one average bone score for the entire skeleton. It does not give the site-specific hip and spine measurements required for clinical diagnosis of low bone density or osteoporosis. That is why the dedicated hip/spine scan is the version physicians rely on for diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Key Differences Between the Two Scans

Why Get These Scans? The Real Benefits (Especially Before Age 65/70)

Bone loss is silent until a fracture occurs. By then, significant damage may already be done.

Hip fracture reality check (after age 65):

Studies show roughly 20–25% one-year mortality following a hip fracture in older adults. Of those who survive, approximately 40–50% never regain their previous level of mobility or independence—many require long-term care or assistance with daily activities.

Early detection gives you time to act:

Men also benefit; although routine screening guidelines start later, proactive baseline testing helps track changes over time. We’re seeing a surprising number of men in their 30’s and 40’s with low bone density numbers.

These scans are informational and educational. Life Fit Labs is not a medical practice and does not provide diagnoses. We deliver clear, easy-to-understand reports directly to you. You then share them with your own physician, who can interpret the T-scores/Z-scores in the context of your full medical history and provide any necessary diagnosis or treatment plan.

Insurance Coverage & Self-Pay Reality

Routine bone density screening is generally not covered by insurance for women before age 65 or men before age 70 unless you have specific high-risk factors (e.g., early menopause, long-term steroid use, family history of hip fracture, certain medical conditions).

That’s why most people in their 30s–60s pay out-of-pocket for proactive scans. The peace of mind and actionable data are well worth the investment—especially when early lifestyle changes can meaningfully slow or even improve bone health.

What to Expect During Your DEXA Scan

Contraindications:

Postpone if you are (or may be) pregnant. Recent X-ray/CT with contrast (within 7 days) may interfere—let us know. Metal implants or devices are usually fine but please inform us.

Preparation:

No special prep required. Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing (no zippers, buttons, jewelry, or underwire bras). Remove any external metal objects.

The Scan Process (both types):

After the Scan:

You’ll receive a detailed, personalized report. A knowledgeable specialist will walk you through every number—explaining what your lean mass, visceral fat, body fat distribution, and bone scores mean in plain English and in the context of your age and goals. We focus on education and next steps you can actually take.

Whether you choose one scan or both in the same visit, you’ll leave with clear, actionable insights and direct access to your results.
