What is a DEXA Scan Test?
DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) uses very low-dose x-rays to accurately measure body composition. With a radiation dose less than that of a transcontinental flight, DEXA is more precise and provides more detailed information than calipers, bioimpedance scales, dunk tanks, or the Bod Pod. If we’re trying to manage our body composition, we must measure what we’re trying to manage. Don’t guess.
At Life Fit Labs, we use a DEXA machine from Hologic, a company that pioneered DEXA technology for measuring bone mineral density in 1989. Our machine scans faster than other models and accommodates larger individuals in a single pass. Your DEXA report will also include a calculation for Appendicular Lean Mass with a comparison to peers of the same age and gender.
What is DEXA Used For?
- Lean Mass: Essential for tracking muscle mass, especially as you age. Higher lean mass is linked to lower mortality and better metabolism.
- Bone Mineral Density (BMD): A key indicator of bone strength, which tends to decline with age. Monitoring BMD helps reduce the risk of fractures.
- Visceral Fat: The fat surrounding vital organs is associated with higher risks for cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, Type 2 Diabetes, and inflammation. DEXA is one of the few methods that can accurately measure visceral fat.
- Body Fat: Unlike other body composition measurements, DEXA can precisely measure the amount and distribution of body fat.
What to Expect During Your DEXA Scan
- Contraindications: If you are pregnant, or there is a chance you are pregnant, the scan should be postponed until pregnancy is ruled out. If you’ve had an X-ray or CT scan with contrast agents in the last 7 days, the contrast agents may interfere with the scan. Nuclear isotope studies aren’t a problem. Please let us know if you have any metal or device implants.
- Preparation: There is no specific preparation required before the scan. However, it's advised to wear comfortable clothing free of any metal (such as jewelry, zippers or buttons) to avoid interference with the scan.
-
The Scan Process:
- You will lie down on a padded table while the DEXA machine passes over your body. The scan typically takes 6-10 minutes to complete.
- The process is non-invasive, painless, and uses a very low dose of x-rays.
-
Post-Scan:
- Once the scan is complete, you'll receive a detailed report with your body composition measurements, including lean mass, bone density, visceral fat, and more.
- A specialist will review the results with you and explain what they mean for your health and fitness goals.
- At Life Fit Labs, we aim to provide a seamless and informative experience that helps you track your body composition and improve your health.
